The True Cost of Hiring: Why Contractors Often Make More Sense Than You Think
When it comes to hiring, it’s easy to focus on the obvious: salaries, job specs, and start dates. But the real cost of a full-time hire often goes much deeper – especially when you factor in onboarding time, overheads, and long-term commitments. That’s where contracting can be a game-changer.
More organisations in Ireland are turning to contractors to deliver specialist projects quickly and efficiently. As companies continue to invest in digital transformation, infrastructure, and business change initiatives, access to experienced professionals on a flexible basis has become increasingly valuable. This trend is reflected in the continued growth of what’s often called the “Project Economy” – highly skilled professionals working on defined projects rather than traditional permanent roles.
According to the latest Ireland’s Project Economy Report from Trinity Business School and Contracting PLUS, the average contractor daily rate across sectors was €552 in 2025, slightly down from €571 in 2024 following a period of rapid growth. Even with this adjustment, average annual earnings for project-based contractors remained strong at €117,978, underlining the ongoing demand for specialist expertise.
In fast-moving sectors like tech and IT, bringing in contractors isn’t just about cost – it’s about flexibility, speed, and getting the right skills exactly when you need them. And when you partner with the right agency, the process becomes even easier.
