Why people stay: the real reasons behind loyalty
Retention isn’t just a list of policies – it’s psychology plus daily experience. Of course, money matters – but it’s not the full story. Research and our own experience tell us people stay for deeper reasons:
Meaning & Purpose: Employees feel their work matters. When people believe what they do has meaning, they’re far less likely to look elsewhere.
Quality of line management & relationships: They trust their manager. Day-to-day interactions with a manager can make or break loyalty. Support, recognition, and honest conversations keep people grounded. Good managers create clarity, recognition, and development – the practical glue for loyalty.
Fair pay & clear career pathways: They see a future. If pay feels fair and there’s a clear path to progress, employees will often stay even if tempted by outside offers.
Autonomy & Flexibility: Since Covid, flexible working has shifted from a perk to an expectation. If it’s not available, employees are quick to look elsewhere.

We have asked our Principal Consultants, Anca Antonica and Conor Hackett, about why candidates stay in their current companies and this is what they said:
“In my experience, tech professionals stay when they feel genuinely challenged and supported, not just managed. Engineers, developers, and architects are loyal to environments where they can influence technical decisions, work with modern tools, and clearly see their impact. When leadership trusts their expertise, communicates a clear vision, and invests in their growth, people feel valued and want to stay.” Anca Antonica, Tech Principal Consultant
“The company has set a clear vision in their goals and also they are clear on what the values of the company are. The people working in the company feel valued and are given responsibilities to help achieve the company goals, hence they feel appreciated. They also are well rewarded for their work and appreciation is shown by the employer when they go above and beyond. “ Conor Hackett, Finance Principal Consultant.
